Going South for the winter? Notify your broker!

The harshness of Quebec winters drives many retired Quebec residents to the United States or other sunny destinations for several weeks a year. If you’re among them, don’t forget to notify your insurance broker before you leave! Here are a few tips and recommendations from Assurances Groupe Vézina to ensure you’re well covered during your escapade in the sun!

Your unoccupied home

Since you’ll be leaving your home unoccupied for several weeks, your broker will:

  • Remind you to make sure you have adequate home insurance during your absence.
  • Inform you about possible coverage exclusions during your absence. For example, your home insurance may not cover damage caused by freezing to your property if your home is unoccupied for more than 7 consecutive days, unless someone you trust checks in on your home every day. Cant’ find someone to come to your home? Turn off the water supply and drain the pipes by turning on the faucets after the water supply is off.
  • Advise you on measures to take to reduce the risks of loss in your home while you’re away. Heating, water supply, maintenance and theft prevention are a few topics you can discuss with your broker.

Are you going to the U.S. by car, motorhome or with a trailer?

Your insurance broker can verify that you have the coverage needed to travel to the U.S. He or she can also provide you with important information you need to know in case of an accident during your trip.

In addition to the advice provided by your broker, take the following precautions before leaving in your vehicle:

  • Make sure your documents are in order: Registration certificate, insurance and driver’s licence.
  • Have your mechanic inspect your car or motorhome, particularly the cooling system, tires, brakes and electrical system.
  • If you don’t already have one, get roadside assistance coverage that is valid in the U.S. If you already have roadside assistance, make sure that your vehicle can be towed in the U.S. in the event of an accident or mechanical breakdown.

If you plan to rent a car during your trip, make sure to have the Q.E.F. No. 27 coverage for rented vehicles, and don’t forget to bring an English version of this endorsement.
