Are you planning to buy a trailer, a fifth-wheel or a motorhome? You need to take some precautions, and not only when you make your purchase, but in the years to come. Get an inspection before buying
Before buying an RV, it’s best to get it inspected by an RV specialist, above all if you’re thinking of buying a used vehicle. Ask the inspector to give you a written report on the vehicle and keep it for your records. Make sure that the inspection includes all the vehicle’s joints and sealants since they can be damaged by exposure to sun and freezing even while sitting on the dealer’s lot.
The RDPRM: Don’t pay someone else’s debts!
If you buy a used RV, check the Register of Personal and Movable Real Rights (RDPRM) to find out if it has been used as collateral or is subject to a lien. In the latter case, the debt is attached to the vehicle and you could end up being responsible for it. One simple step could save you a lot of grief.
Preventive maintenance lets you travel worry free
Inspect your RV at least twice a year, in the spring and fall, and pay particular attention to the joints and sealants. This will allow you to detect any signs of deterioration and make repairs before serious damage occurs.
It’s also important to carefully read the manufacturer’s maintenance guide for your RV and follow the recommendations to a T. And be aware that if you don’t, certain warranties may not be valid in the event of breakdowns.
Latent or manufacturing defects? Defend your rights!
You have scrupulously followed the manufacturer’s recommendations and done all the necessary checks. But then you notice a manufacturing or latent defect. What can you do? First, inform the seller of the defect in writing as soon as possible. Then consult a lawyer to know your rights and possible recourses and take the appropriate measures.
